Since 1990, UNITER is host to the National Romanian Center for the International Theatre Institute.
The President of the Romanian Center is Ion Caramitru, and the General Secretary is Margareta Barbuta. The Center does not have a fixed structure. Everyone working in the theatre industry may benefit from its services. The Center offers professional assistance to foreign theatre people visiting Romania for research purposes.
ITI – The International Theatre Institute, a non-governmental international organization, associated to UNESCO, with national centers in a hundred countries throughout the world, was founded in Prague in 1948 by UNESCO and an international theatre community. The main purpose of ITI is to promote international exchange of science and practice of performing arts (theatre, dance, theatre music), in order to consolidate peace and solidarity among people, to enhance mutual understanding and to increase the creative co-operation among all people working in the field of performing arts.
Every year, the Center celebrates the World Theatre Day (on March 27th) and the International Dance Day (on April 29th).
